Phi Eta Sigma is a national honor society whose purpose is to recognize and reward students who demonstrate a commitment to academic excellence in their first year at an institution of higher learning. Phi Eta Sigma promotes fellowship, leadership, and community service. It is the oldest and largest freshman honor society.

Phi Eta Sigma was founded on March 22, 1923, at the University of Illinois. Phi Eta Sigma was granted membership into the Association of College Honor Societies in 1937. Only three societies have enjoyed longer membership in this prestigious association. Since its inception in 1923, the number of chapters has grown to over three hundred while the membership has soared to over 700,000.

The Midwestern State University chapter of Phi Eta Sigma was founded on December 5, 1975, and has been serving the Wichita Falls' community ever since.

Phi Eta Sigma membership is an incentive for continued commitment to academic excellence. It provides annual graduate and undergraduate scholarships at both the national and local levels. Phi Eta Sigma membership identifies its members as possessing superior academic ability and dedication.

Eligibility

Freshmen men or women who rank in the upper 20 percent of their class, who have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale at the end of any curricular period in which they were enrolled full-time, and who carried an acceptable academic load in pursuit of a bachelor's degree are eligible for membership.

Time of Induction

Although you will probably prefer to be inducted with your fellow classmates, you are eligible for induction at any time following the academic period in which the eligibility requirement was met.

Requirements for Continued Membership

Upon induction into Phi Eta Sigma, you will enjoy lifetime membership and are not required to maintain any minimum grade point average.

Membership Dues

There is a one-time national membership fee of $20, however, local chapters are allowed to set a local membership fee to help meet the chapter's needs. Your $20 national membership fee entitles you to receive an academic key or tie tac, a membership certificate, and a copy of Phi Eta Sigma's national magazine, Forum of Phi Eta Sigma. A portion of the membership fee helps to pay the cost of sending a chapter delegate to attend the national convention and to fund scholarships for members.

Scholarships

Each year, approximately fifty $1,000 scholarships and twenty-seven $2,000 scholarships are awarded for undergraduate study by the national office. Approximately five $2,000 scholarships are awarded each year for first year graduate study.
