LIONS CLUB
MIDWESTERN STATE UNIVERSITY

The Wichita Falls Founder Lions Club is organizing a Campus Lions Club at MSU, composed of students, faculty and staff.  The club will be student led with faculty and staff serving as advisors.

LIONS

Lions are more that 1.4 million strong, men and women, young and old.  You will find Lions in more than 180 countries and geographical areas.  Since our beginning in 1917 in Dallas, Texas, we have been united in a single cause: helping those less fortunate.  Lions Clubs International is the largest service club organization in the world whose members have a reputation as the “doers” in the community.  Lion’s motto, “We Serve,” is exemplified through tackling the tough problems like blindness and drug abuse as well as diabetes awareness and finding help and training for the deaf, disabled, underprivileged and the elderly.  Perhaps someone you know, parent, grandparent, other relative or friend, is a Lion.

A LIONS CLUB AT MSU

Additional Lions Clubs strengthen the organization as a whole, enhance the organization’s ability to do good work and offer individuals opportunity to serve others.  The Wichita Falls Founder Lions Club will dedicate the MSU Campus Lions Club to the memory of Lion D. L. Ligon, a “doer” for MSU and the Wichita Falls Community.

THE WICHITA FALLS FOUNDER LIONS CLUB

Lions Clubs International gave the “Founder” designation to Lions Clubs that were a part of the beginning in Dallas.  The Wichita Falls Founder Lions Club received its charter in 1917 as the Wichita Falls Lions Club.  It was known as the Downtown Lions Club until it was designated as a Founder Club.  One of its early leaders was Lion Dr. D. L. (Partner) Ligon.  Under his leadership, the club purchased band uniforms for Hardin College (MSU’s predecessor) and planted numerous trees on campus. In 1983, as a tribute to Lion Ligon, the club purchased and dedicated the MSU sign on the southeast part of the campus near the coliseum, which is named for him. Each year, numerous scholarships are given to MSU students with proceeds from the Texas-Oklahoma Fair, a project of the Wichita Falls Founder Lions Club.  There are many more projects at MSU sponsored by the Founder Club too numerous to mention here. Texas Lions operate a camp at Kerrville for diabetic or physically challenged young people.
