Alpha Chi (AX) is a National College Honor Scholarship Society, and Midwestern State University hosts the Texas Alpha Gamma Chapter. The purpose of AX is to "promote academic excellence and exemplary character among college and university students and to honor those who achieve such distinction".

Alpha Chi is organized at the national, regional, and local levels. The National Council consists of eight faculty members elected at the National Convention, seven faculty members that are the secretary-treasurers of the regions, and seven students representing the regions.

There are seven regions throughout the U.S. The Alpha Gamma Chapter is in Region I, which covers New Mexico, the Oklahoma Panhandle and West Texas. Each region has an executive committee comprised of faculty sponsors elected as president, vice-president, and secretary-treasurer. One student is elected to be on the executive committee as well. At the local level, each chapter has an official sponsor and may have additional sponsors chosen by the chapter or official sponsor. Student members are integral to AX at all levels, and have many opportunities for leadership and scholarship.
