Hometown: Highland Park, Illinois
Academics: Sophomore, Undecided
Up close: Matt came to MSU with a background as one of the strongest juniors in the nation in sprint track events. He won the kilometer time trial at USA Cycling's Junior National Track Championships in Trexlertown, Pa., in July 2006. He also finished third at junior nationals in the keirin. Those results played a key role in his being named to the U.S. National Team where he competed in the kilo at the Junior World Track Cycling Championships in Ghent, Belgium. Matt also was selected to race with the national team in Trinidad earlier in the summer.
In September 2007, Matt competed at the Collegiate National Track Cycling Championships in San Diego, Calif. His results included an eighth-place finish in the match sprint, 10th place in the kilometer trial trial and 17th in the points race.
Matt started out his collegiate career by getting on the podium at the collegiate track championships in Indianapolis with both a fourth-place finish in the kilometer time trial and as part of MSU's fourth-place team pursuit squad.
In addition to racing on the track, Matt has been spending time putting in base miles and has developed into one of the top Category B riders in the South Central collegiate conference. |
